Like Rome, Delhi wasn’t built in a day!

The capital city of India is famous for too many things that tourists travel from around the the country and world to this glorious city for its gorgeous sight! The temples of Delhi pretty much tops this list. With architecture and stories that will take you back in time, not only throws off some positive vibes but will also bring out the curious little child in you. So, if stepping out for some religious detoxing and enriching yourself in some rich culture and heritage that the city possesses is your agenda for the day, then this is your guide.

1. Swaminarayan Akshardham



'Akshardham' translates to divine abode of God. The mandir is a humble tribute to Bhagwan Swaminarayan, the avatars, devas and the great sages of Hinduisim. It is entirely constructed from Rajasthani pink sandstone and Italian Carrara marble, based on traditional Hindu architectural guidelines of Shilpa Shastra. It has no support from steel or cement or any ferrous metal. It was inaugurated and opened in 2005 after much skilled work.

Fact: more than 300,000,000 hours spent in its making and over 8000 volunteers from across the world participated in its building.

Mandir Timings: Thursday to Sunday - 9:30 am to 6:30 pm


2. Birla Mandir



Also known as the Laxmi Narayan temple, is a world famous tourist spot and a major attraction. The temple is dedicated to Laxmi the goddess of prosperity and Narayan the preserver. Built by Industrialist Sh. J.K.Birla in 1939, atop a 280 feet high hillock on a 13 acres plot. Its construction took 10 years.

Fact: The mandir was inaugrated by Mahatma Gnadhi on the condition that the mandir is open to people of all castes and walks of life.

Mandir Timings: 4:30 am to 1:30 pm and 2:30 pm to 9:00 pm


3. Hanuman Mandir



An another famous sight of worship. Purely dedicated to God Hanuman. Said to have first been built during Emperor Akbar's reign, was reconstructed by Maharaja Jai Singh in 1724, at the same time as Jantar Mantar. This temple has undergone many notable changes and renovations, thus making it one of Delhi's most loved religious destinations.


Fact: An important feature of worship at this temple is the 24 hour chanting of the mantra or hymn " Sri Ram, Jai Ram, Jai Jai Ram", since August 1.1964.This continuous chanting till date has been recorded in the Genius Book of records.

Mandir timings: 5:00 am to 11:00 pm


4. ISKCON



The International Society of Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) was founded in July 1966. It was personally directed by its founder - Acarya Srila Prabhupada, who incorporated the seven purposes of ISKCON in the temple documents.

Fact: It is popularly known as the Hare Krishna Movement, a worldwide confederation of more than 400 temple, 100 vegetarian restaurants and a wide variety of cmmunity serving projects.

Mandir Timings: Open all days of the week with special timings for darshans.


5. Lotus Temple



One of the most prominent attractions of New Delhi. Located close to Nehru Place, one of the busiest commercial hubs in the city. It holds to itself a unique pleasant and tranquil ambiance. It is a Bahai House of worship and is kept open to people of all religions. The Bahai faith is a world religion whose purpose is to unite all races and people in one Universal cause and one common faith. Having won several architectural awards is referred as the most visited building in the world.


Fact: The temple has 9 doors opening into a central hall, is built in the shape of a lotus flower amidst the lush green landscape.

Temple Timings: 9 am to 6 pm
